Fake firearms deadly as the real thing
The police in Bintulu, northern Sarawak, have uncovered such a weapon following the arrest of a middle-aged man recently.
Bintulu police chief Supt Sulaiman Abdul Razak said police found the man with the potentially deadly weapon following tip-offs from the public.
"The imitation pistol can function like a real weapon if it is loaded with ball bearings that can penetrate vital organs. It can kill. It is a dangerous weapon," he said.
He added that police were unsure if the weapon was imported and were still investigating where and how the suspect obtained it.
"He claimed he had obtained it from another person. We (police) may soon charge him under the Firearms Act even though it is an imitation pistol."
Police also seized about 20 ball bearings from the man.
In Miri, some people said the imitation pistols were being sold but the police here have not received any reports on such cases.
Miri Police Chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim said anybody possessing such imitation pistols should surrender them immediately.
He added that it was a serious offence to possess such pistols and urged the public to lodge police reports immediately if they found such weapons or knew anyone who owned them.
